Six years ago, I had a deal with Lifetime Television to develop my bestselling novel, The Dirty Girls Social Club, as a TV series. It soon became clear that the relationship wasn’t going to work, when two executives insisted that my pilot outline “wasn’t Latin enough,” because it told of middle class, educated American women who happened to be Latina.
“This reads as if it were about me and my friends,” complained one executive in disgust.
I didn’t know how to respond, so I asked her what she’d prefer.
“Why don’t we make the girls debating whether or not to date men in prison? I know that’s what Latinas talk about, just like it’s what black women talk about.”

people always want to talk shit about us when we complain about fucked up representation…but these are the conversations happening in board rooms. like, jesus fucking christ. fuck this planet.

we sure wouldn’t want women of color to be portrayed as normal people would we

This literally makes me want to MURDER someone.Like I’m in fucking tears RN. As an former actress do you know that I went into auditions with other POC and was told CONSTANTLY by whites,to be more black? Every POC was told to be more black,be more asian,be more latino. Because a white man /woman’s idea of what we are as POC trumps what we ACTUALLY are as POC. They don’t want to know us,the stereotypes is what they know, love and overtly comfortable with.
And to say that “this looks like a conversation between me andmy friends” basically means,we clearly have similarities, but you refuse to see that we do. You “can’t relate” to ha because you don’t even think we’re similar. You don’t even think we’re human like you. You literally think all Latina and black women talk dating men from prison when a Latina is sitting in front if you telling you otherwise. These men and women in power literally erase us,our stories,in place of the racist white supremacist fueled tropes they refuse to let go of.
These are the men and women in power deciding what you men and every person on the globe sees. They control media. They control our reality. They decide what we see,and deem normal. And when you have white racists who are in control of the perception of POC,you control the perception of race in America
